Ask any parent who has adopted from Brazil, "What would you do differently?" You will find every parent answers, "Learn more Portuguese."

It is safe to assume that your new child does not know any English. Your child may learn it quickly, but your knowledge of a few basic Portuguese "survival" phrases will ease the transition period. You don't have to learn how to ask a bus driver for directions to the snake farm. You don't need to know how to order black bean soup from the menu. The most important Portuguese you will need to know is Survival Portuguese to better communicate with your new child.
